Job Description

Under the general supervision of a licensed physician, evaluates and treats patients having medical and/or surgical problems. Performs routine histories and physical examinations; performs and/or interprets diagnostic tests and/or procedures as detailed in the department specific scope of practice. Participates in teaching and quality assurance activities with other members of the clinical department. Delivers direct patient care. The Chief Physician Assistant performs a lead clinical supportive role, including administrative duties and special projects. Provides care to patients of all ages.

1. Under the general supervision of an appropriately licensed physician, performs complete patient histories and physical examinations; orders laboratory tests and x-rays; performs and/or interprets laboratory and test results and initiates treatment. May perform routine or emergency procedures including but not limited to casts, splints, irrigation and suturing of wounds or incisions, drainage of abscesses, insertion of intravenous lines, sampling of arterial blood, etc. Writes appropriately authorized prescriptions; may prescribe controlled substances under appropriate physician countersignature. May respond to initial requests for service-specific consultation.
2. May initiate or participate in initial management and stabilization of patients or other medical or surgical emergencies.
3. Confers with attending physicians, residents, nursing staff, etc., to ensure delivery of optimum quality of patient care. Confers regularly with Supervising Physician and/or Physician Assistant and co-workers to keep them apprised of clinical developments, patient concerns, etc. May participate in special projects assigned. May prepare QA data for review.
4. Performs other duties pursuant to clinical responsibility, such as arranging follow-up for patients, obtaining informed consent from patient, recalling patients for further evaluation and treatment, escorting patients, when necessary, to other areas of the hospital, etc. Informs patients of necessary post-discharge instructions as required.      Makes appropriate entries in patient’s charts.
5. Completes and documents participation in continuing medical education required of physician assistants in order to meet requirements for certification, including assigned lectures and conferences.
6. May act as first assistant in operating area as needed. May perform pre-operative and post-operative evaluation and render related medical care as necessary.
7. Performs related duties as required professionally or at the request of the supervising physician and/or Director of Service.
8. Handles complex cases and gives guidance to staff Physician Assistants
9. Performs administrative and other special projects at the discretion of the department director.
10. Supervises staff Physician Assistants, including overseeing scheduling, orientation, completing FPPE/OPPE and quality assurance/CQI.

-Bachelor of Science, Physician Assistant Studies/Masters Physician Assistant Studies.

-5 years physician assistant and 1 year supervisor experience preferred. 

-Job requires completion of NYS-approved program for training of physician or specialist assistants to acquire knowledge of anatomy, physiology and clinical patient care, usually via Bachelor of Science program/degree in closely related field. Certain education/training may be accepted by NYS in lieu of these requirements (nurse, etc.)

-Registration required with New York State as Physician Assistant or Specialist Assistant. Certification with National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (or equivalent organization) mandatory. Certification may be required with American Heart Association or like organization in some areas as provider of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)/Basic Life Support (BLS).

-Job requires two or more years of progressively more responsible experience as physician assistant preferably in a large-scale healthcare organization OR one year minimum experience in relevant department, demonstrating superior ability to perform all tasks within the delineation of privileges permitted for specific department.

-High level of analytical ability required to effectively and expeditiously diagnose and treat medical/surgical problems under the direction of physician.

-Interacts with various internal hospital medical, administrative and professional staff in the course of routine clinical duties. High degree of responsibility required for daily contacts with patients and their families.

-Manual dexterity required for adept manipulation of surgical instruments and handling of medical equipment; physical strength necessary for lifting and proper handling/positioning of patients.
